Today, Motorola has combined forces with Verizon Wireless network to bring smart phone users another option besides the Apple iPhone and the Blackberry, the Google Android powered Droid. Hearing Aids May Get New Technology from MIT Researchers

Back in the fall of 2007, MIT researchers discovered a hearing mechanism that modernized an inner ear function. This new hearing mechanism could help explain the ear’s remarkable ability to discriminate and sense various sounds. Improvements or restoring hearing is what this discovery could eventually lead to. It may also lead to advanced hearing aids.
Researchers found that the tectorial membrane – a jellylike arrangement inside the cochlea of the ear- is more significant to hearing than formerly considered. It can carefully pick up and broadcast energy to dissimilar parts of the cochlea via a kind of wave that is diverse from that normally connected with hearing.
For over half a century, scientists have known that the inside of the cochlea sound waves are translated up and down waves that travel along a configuration called basilar membrane. However, the teams of researchers have now found that a dissimilar kind of way, a traveling wave that moves from side to side, could also carry sound energy. This wave also moves along the tectorial membrane, which is positioned straight above the sensory hair cells that transmits sound to the brain. This second wave mechanism is poised to play a serious role in delivering reverberation signals to these hair cells. Hearing aid reviews are ecstatic about this new finding.
What this means is the ear mechanically interpret sound in two different kinds of wave motions at a single time. These waves can interact to excite the hair cells and augment their compassion, which could help explain how we hear sound and distinguish what is being said, as quiet as a whisper.
